There are many reasons as a student while you might want to take up part-time jobs while in school.

Maybe you just want to make your own money or you really need this money to be able to complete your degree, you probably you just want to learn or have a skill.

But the real truth is, working too many hours could tank your CGPA, which would affect your chances of earning a scholarship and even graduating with a good grade.

Most students are very quick to take up part-time jobs while in school without considering the disadvantages of part-time jobs for students.

Like every other venture, there are two sides to working part-time while in school.

Part-time jobs in school have its disadvantages as well as its advantages which must be weighed carefully before any student should take up part-time jobs.

It’s usually very common for students to look at the direction of the funds they stand to gain without thinking of the effect of part-time jobs for students on their academics.

The very truth is if you are not very careful with part-time jobs as a student, not only will you graduate with a low grade than you should have, you may end up spilling or not graduating at all.

It is very true that you will gain a lot from working part-time but you may also lose a lot in your academics.

Nevertheless, in this article, we will be discussing some of the disadvantages of taking up part-time jobs while in college.



One of the biggest disadvantages of working while studying is the stress and exhaustion you may experience.

Keeping a detailed planner and a list of prioritized tasks can help, but that requires extraordinary self-discipline and exceptional time management skills.

You may have trouble getting enough sleep and that’s bad for your brain.

Exercising and self-care can end up low on your priority list. You may neglect your health and end up with mono. Getting sick will cause you to miss school and work, which has its own detrimental consequences.

Like most parents often advise their kids, “please focus on your study, don’t do any side hustle. Let us know when you need anything.”

But it is not so easy for every parents or family and that’s why it is also important for some students to work parttime while in school.

Let’s look at a few reasons why most persons are against working part-time while studying.

1. Less time for homework:

It is on very rare occasions that working students have time to complete their homework.

This has a negative effect on the academic performance of the student.

Most often, students doing part-time work are fond of copying assignments from friends and sometimes even paying to get their assignments done.

That isn’t a good academic practice at all. But what can a part-time worker do?

2. Passion Drifts:

It is usually noticed that students that work part-time while in school oftentimes have their passion drift away.

There is a primary reason for coming to school which most students tend to forget.

Part-time job while in school have caused students to forget the importance of education and why they should go to university.

3. Higher Rates Of Absenteeism:

Depending on the kind of part-time just a student is involved with, employment may place constraints on the student’s study and sleep time.

Fatigue or lack of preparation for the day’s academic activities may discourage the working teen from going to school and a job may take the place of extracurricular activities.

This has made so many students miss even important classes.

4. Lower Grades In School:

Students who work more than 20 hours a week have grade point averages that are lower than other students who work 10 or fewer hours a week.

Working and keeping up with academics is one of the world most difficult task.

Majority of students that work part-time often end up getting poor grades.

5. More Likely To Use Drugs And Alcohol:

Research suggests that substance abuse is higher for students who work 20 or more hours per week.

However, it depends greatly on the kind of part-time jobs a student does.

But there are a lot of students that have gotten into drug abuse because of the fact that they were distracted by part-time work.

6. Development Of Negative Views Of Work Itself.

Early entry into a negative or harsh work environment may encourage negative views of work.

This would depend greatly on the maturity level of the student and the type of job obtained.

7. Increased Stress:

Balancing work and school can prove to be too much for any student.

It isn’t an easy task at all balancing work and academics.

However, the reason most students even engage in part-time work is because of the demanding academic expenses.

Coping with the bills in school may be really challenging especially for students with little or no financial support. But that doesn’t in any way annul the disadvantages of part-time jobs for students.

Disadvantages of Working While Studying

A part-time job can be less of a benefit and more of a distraction for the typical student. This is a fact you must deal with if you must take up a part-time job in school!


Carefully weigh the pros and cons of working before deciding to take up a part-time job while you study.

NOTE: Most students thrive when working and studying.

Consider your energy level, your long-range plans and the sacrifices you will have to make if you devote several hours each week to work commitments.

You may find it helpful to start out working just a few hours on weekends to see how things go and then slowly increase your hours.
