HOW TO PREPARE FOR JAMB EXAMINATION

There is this question that always pops up in the mind of every student preparing to write Jamb examination which is, “How to prepare for Jamb examination?” Just like every other examination, Jamb examination is not different but has a definite way to prepare for it.
Like I always say, the problem or solution is not to read 24/7, it is reading the right way and learning time management in Jamb examination.
If you don’t know how to prepare for Jamb examination the right way, it doesn’t matter if you read 24/7, you will still have a problem on the day of the jamb examination.
Having the wrong mindset can affect your Jamb examination preparation so badly. Just like the manner of so many students who thinks sleeping is wrong when you have to write an examination.

Sleeping is not a crime when preparing to write Jamb examination, in fact, it is ideal to sleep for like 8hours a night before an examination. Unfortunately, sleep is as important to learning as exercise is to physical stamina of the body.
One way or the other, we have all come across this particular person that sleeps so much yet very intelligent. Sometimes, we are dumbfounded with their level of intelligence and wonder when they do read because we always see them sleep. Then, we just give it to them by saying, “This person is just blessed with knowledge, that’s why he/she doesn’t need to work hard like me.”
In fact, if you deprive yourself of sleep the night before an examination, you may end up doing worse than if you hadn’t studied at all, because you may forget not only what you have studied, but what you already knew!

HOW TO PREPARE FOR JAMB EXAMINATION:

STUDY PLAN

Success rarely occurs through accident or good fortune. It takes time, planning and dedication – particularly when it comes to achieving study goals or preparing for Jamb examination.
I remember vividly some years ago how difficult it was for me to create or keep to a study plan because I was not being faithful to myself.
I would list out all the subjects I want to study which is good, then I will allocate like 2hours of sleep in a whole 24hours, I won’t even add resting time to it, time to even chat with friends and family, because I would tell myself that I don’t need to rest or chat at this time.
This was really a great challenge and I ended up not being able to keep to my study plan.
One of the keys to having a good study plan is understanding your study habits. This is when you can work on finding a better balance, adapting your plan and allocating the time needed to achieve your study goals – even in the subjects you find most challenging.
To have a great study plan for your next Jamb examination, your study plan must contain your resting time, your short and long term goals.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR JAMB EXAMINATION:

AVOID PROCRASTINATION

This is one of the most killers of time.
It is one of the reasons many students don’t do well in the Jamb Examination.
Students procrastinate not because they are lazy but because they put more value on what is happening today to what should or will happen tomorrow.
Have a clear goal and build your motivation.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR JAMB EXAMINATION:

STUDY ENVIRONMENT

Locating a good study environment is one way to prepare for Jamb examination.

By now, you should know what works for you. If reading at home works for you, create a reading environment at home.

Personally for me, reading at home is fine and I even understand better but I don’t read at home because of the distractions from family members.

Locate where works and make there your study environment but ensure you get rid of distractions.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR JAMB EXAMINATION:

NOW LET US BRING IT HOME

We have put together key points you can relate with when you prepare for Jamb examination:

1)  WRITE DOWN THE SCORE YOU WANT TO GET AND WORK TOWARDS IT

Many persons make the mistake of just wanting to write Jamb examination and hoping to just get anything above 200. It doesn’t work like that.

You should have a high target score your working towards and pattern your reading or preparation towards achieving it.

If you don’t have a high target score in mind that you want to get, chances are you won’t be disciplined enough to prepare well for your Jamb Examination.

2)  MAKE USE OF PAST QUESTIONS

In preparing for the Jamb examination, you have to make past question part of your study materials.

Before we proceed further, we recommend you check out the article we did on the importance of using jamb past questions.

By using the Jamb past examination question papers as part of your preparation, it will help you find out what you already know, what you don’t know too well and what you don’t even know at all.

You must not joke with the use of past questions because it also shows you how Jamb examination questions are asked and also helps you remember vividly what you have read.

Furthermore, making use of Jamb past questions helps save you a lot of time thinking through some options that you probably must have come across.

There are a lot more benefits of using past questions papers that we have covered in our previous article.

3) STUDY THE PART THAT YOU KNOW COMES OUT MOST IN EVERY EXAM

in learning how to prepare for jamb examination, you have to study with direction.

Every year, there are a few questions that are mostly repeated Jamb examination. Such questions should be to you as a bonus and you shouldn’t miss it for anything.

When you study from the part or topics that come out the most in Jamb examination, you are going to have a direction of how the questions are asked and it will save you a lot of time when taking the Jamb examination.

4) HAVE A JOTTER OR A NEW NOTEBOOK FOR STUDY

Get a jotter to jot down the most important things so you don’t forget what they are and where they are located.

When you prepare for the Jamb examination, it is best to have a fresh notebook to jot down all the key things you will come across while reading the Jamb focus textbooks or studying past questions.

5) READ THE EXAM FOCUS TEXTBOOKS

The exam focus textbooks are the Jamb recommended textbooks for Jamb 2019.

6) DON’T RELY ON EXPO

In knowing how to prepare for Jamb Examination, you shouldn’t rely on using expo.

Expo can make you fail woefully.

I have shared a story of how I failed Jamb in 2012 woefully because of using expo. Click here to read about it under decisiveness

Always read your books and learn time management. Expo can’t make you pass Jamb examination.

7) ROTATE THE SUBJECTS WHILE READING

While you prepare for Jamb examination, don’t make the mistake of reading just the subjects you love thinking you can get a score that will cover up for the rest subjects.

It is four subjects you are writing, try as much as possible to read every subject following your study plan.

Doesn’t matter if you like the subject or not, just try to read them all because passing them is important.

8) READ CONSTRUCTIVELY

Most people tend to ignore some topics in Jamb focus textbooks on the basis that they won’t come out, don’t do that.

Make sure you read extensively even the little topics most people consider irrelevant and make judicious use of past questions.

Don’t ignore any topic at all for any reason. If it’s too hard to know, memorize it for the examination.

Never forget the goal of every examination, it’s to pass very well.

9) DISCUSS WITH STUDY MATES

If you have study mates, having a group discussion on what you have read is very important as it helps you remember better.

If you don’t have one, it’s fine. You can use your phone to record yourself discussing what you have read and when you are done, you go back to your textbook and study more, then come back to your recording to see if there is any contradiction to what you have just read.

10) SEEK HELP

This is one point I could boldly say it’s probably the most important because I used it too.

The problem of many students is not that they don’t read or don’t want to read, but it is just that they don’t understand what they read.

It is hard reading what you don’t know or don’t understand, it’s like reading something written in dutch.

If that’s your case, you better attend a lecture.

There are several Jamb tutorial lectures you can attend to help you grasp.

Nevertheless, if you find to attend a lecture not helpful, you can go to a private tutor.

Also, if you find private tutor not convenient, you can always ask fellow Jamb candidates you know to help you with what you are having trouble understanding. Just get help!

Don’t just assume or ignore any subject or topics you don’t know.

Make sure you know as much as you can before going into that Jamb CBT hall.

11) ENSURE YOU AVOID DRINKING CAFFEINE OR CAfFENATED DRINK THE MORNING BEFORE JAMB EXAMINATION

The last Jamb I wrote though I still considered my first because it was the only Jamb examination I really read for.

That was the first time Jamb was trying CBT and I registered to write with CBT.

3days to the examination, I started taken caffeine and refused to sleep. For good three days combine, I didn’t sleep up to 5hours.

On the day of the examination before the commencement, I was not myself and slept off in front of my system. Someone had to wake me up, yet, my brain could not remember things, I started crying for myself.

God so kind, I still tried answering the questions the best way I could remember and when the result came out, I got above 225 even though caffeine fucked me up. And that was the same Jamb I used to get into a reputable university that I am currently studying mechanical engineering.

Please avoid caffeine the night or morning before the Jamb examination.

12) HAVE GOOD QUALITY SLEEP THE NIGHT BEFORE YOUR JAMB EXAMINATION.

The importance of sleep the night before Jamb examination cannot be overemphasized. Sleep helps you remember and wakes up all your tired nerves.

We have discussed sleep above and how it is advisable to get at least 8hours of sleep the night before an examination.

In fact, if you deprive yourself of sleep the night before an examination, you may end up doing worse than if you hadn’t studied at all, because you may forget not only what you have studied, but what you already knew!

13) PRAYER

This is the most important tip you shouldn’t take lightly.

Always pray!

If you can only make use of these tips, this year jamb will be your last.
