IMPORTANCE OF READING

From time to time, some persons have regularly asked about the importance of reading. They don’t just seem to get it.

You may even be one of them who have asked the importance of reading and seemingly don’t get why people should read. But not to worry, you are about to learn the importance of reading now.

For some persons, reading is for students who are preparing to write an examination. This shouldn’t be so.

When there is an examination to write, then we will read and when there is no examination, reading becomes an alien action.

Earlier today, I was having a discussion with a young lady that graduated from the university a few months ago and she said, she will never read books again since she is done with school. I was perplexed by her words but nevertheless, maybe is her perception and understanding about the importance of reading.

Your fancy or purpose for reading should not be tied to examination writing or even about being in college or high school.

Reading is important for a variety of reasons. It’s not limited to passing an examination even though reading has lots of importance which are more than just passing an examination.

DOES READING DETERMINE INTELLIGENCE

This is a strong argument about reading. This also comes down to why going to school is important.

But truthfully, being unable to read does not determine one’s intelligence.

Some time ago, I read about John Corcoran, who wrote The Teacher Who Couldn’t Read, he is a very intelligent man.

He graduated from Secondary school and the University, became a popular Secondary School teacher and later a successful businessman,  all these he did without knowing how to read.

Now, if a man like John Corcoran can succeed without reading, why is reading important?

A person should really read Mr John Corcoran’s story it will inspire or teach you something, to understand the feeling of shame, loneliness and fear that he experienced all his life before he was ever able to read.

Though, he was able to succeed in spite of his inability to read because he is an intelligent man filled with ability and determination.

NOW, LET’S LIST A FEW IMPORTANCE OF READING:
1) READING DEVELOPS LANGUAGE SKILL

Most times when we read, we don’t readily know all the vocabulary we come across.

When we check them up, our exposure to the language is increased.

2) READING ENCOURAGES THE THIRST FOR KNOWLEDGE

It doesn’t matter if you are reading for pleasure or for knowledge, the more you read, the more you learn and the zeal to learn more is increased.

3) READING KEEPS YOU INFORMED

Nearly all our learning materials are in written form. If you don’t know how to read, you may not be able to benefit from the information that’s in written form.

Reading is how we discover new things.

Books, magazines and even the Internet are vast learning tools but it requires the ability to read and understand what is read.

We live in an era where there is information all around us but the ability to read is an advantage to take good advantage of it.

4) READING GIVES YOU THE ADVANTAGE

The information you get from reading is what someone who hasn’t read the same thing is ignorant about.

The more you read, the more you become advantageous over your peers. Reading develops you.

Reading helps you know things.

5) READING EXERCISES YOUR BRAIN

The brain needs constant exercise and reading an understanding written text is one way it grows in its ability.

Learning to cultivate the habit of reading helps you develop your language skills. This in turns helps you listen.

The more you read and your brain is exercised, the less you talk giving others the opportunity to communicate too.

6) READING HELPS YOU COMMUNICATES WITH PEOPLE

When you read, your language skill is developed. Reading develops your vocabulary, grammatical structures, sentence structures etc.

Reading gives you an idea, a situation, a whole scene of conversation and communication.

You can read how people interact verbally and non-verbally in every situation, and you learn from it.

This helps you in your communication with people because it brings to life what you have read.

7) READING ENHANCE YOUR CONCENTRATION

When you read, your concentration is usually increased more especially when you are reading something of interest to you.

You can be in a gathering where there are so many activities that try to divide your attention but reading helps you concentrate at such times.

8) READING DEVELOPS YOUR IMAGINATIVE POWER AND CREATIVITY

Imagination is more important than knowledge. For while knowledge defines all we currently know and understand, imagination points to all we might yet discover and create.
– Albert Einstein.

Everything starts to change when we start to read and gain knowledge.

The more we read, the more enlightened or knowledgeable we become.

Gaining knowledge or reading empowers our minds and broadens its range.

Reading broadens our imagination by stimulating the right side of our brain.

When we gain knowledge from reading, it opens our minds to new possibilities and new ideas helping us experience and analyzes the world in our minds.

When we analyze the world in our minds, how creative power is being energized.

9) READING IMPROVES WRITING

There is the saying that every good writer is a good reader. It works vice versa.

When you read always, you get to learn several writing styles that you may adopt when you want to write.

When you read a book that you love, you are likely to adopt the ideas of writing gotten from the book when you want to write.

10) READING IS FUN

Reading is relaxing, funny, exciting, thrilling and much more.

It’s true that not all of the time, though, when we are forced to read what we can rarely relate to, it isn’t fun at all.

On average, reading is fun.

11) READING REDUCES STRESS

A study by consultancy firm Mindlab International at the University of Sussex showed that reading reduces stress.

It is a proven fact that pleasure reading helps to reduce stress.

Pleasure reading can be a wonderful (and healthy) escape from the stress.

Simply by opening a book, you enjoy reading, you allow yourself to be invited into a literary world that distracts you from what stresses you out.

Reading can even relax your body by lowering your heart rate and easing the tension in your muscles.

Finally, reading just shows you another kind of world. It helps you learn about people are their culture even without you travelling.
